The first step to actually building a website is to first think about your customers. Put yourself in their shoes. If you want to buy something, what experience would you expect? How would you want the product shipped? How much would you be willing to pay? What about returns? If you focus on customers and the experience they will have interacting with your website, you cannot go wrong and they will buy boatloads from you. If you don't, they'll find somewhere else to spend their money.
Template based website companies, such as Site Build It! and Weebly, Homestead, and Network Solutions (see below) are the fastest, easiest way to get started! Hundreds of styles have already been created for you. You choose a main design that makes sense for what you're selling (i.e., no pink if you're selling tools to men!) then start typing. To add your links, click on the "links" icon. Everything you do instantly appears before your eyes so you can decide if you like it. If you don't, you can easily change the colors, fonts, number of pages, etc. Usually it's just "drag and drop" when adding paragraphs and photos and step-by-step instructions are provided.This is also referred to as WYSIWIG, which stands for "what you see is what you get." Linking is one of the most important things you can do on your site. Link to news articles and other sites that are relevant. You can even link to the manufacturers of your products as long as they aren't selling to the public and also a competitor. Links really do add value and something for your visitors to look through. Speaking of content, don't forget to add that too. Without it no one will have a reason to ever come back to your site. Educate your customers while they are shopping on your site.
